Is the Nikon F3 35mm Film Camera still reliable?

At the time of writing this in 2026, it has been 46 years since the Nikon F3 was first released, and continued to be produced until 2001, a production run starting in 1980 and running for a whopping 21 years.
This means that the oldest F3s are 46 years old, the youngest are 25, so how are they fairing?
Well, the good news is that aside from user damage, poor storage or heavy wear from use, these cameras are still pretty bulletproof, and the vast majority of issues are now resolved through targeted repairs, or more commonly, a full overhaul and calibration. The F3, F3 HP, F3/T (Titanium), and F3 Press models were used extensively in professional environments, meaning that many examples have had their fair share of use, so common wear items can need replacing.
During their lives, many F3s and other Nikon film cameras would have been sent off to authorised Nikon service centres for a ‘CLA’ which stands for ‘Clean, Lubricate, Adjust’, effectively a light service by our 2026 standards. This term has adopted various meanings throughout its life, and as such, the term is not a very good gauge for understanding the extent of a service.
As you would expect, Nikon and the other manufacturers of film cameras, no longer offer any support or parts for cameras from the original film era. We do however know, that the Nikon F3 and its other Nikon family members now need a much deeper level of servicing to address the numerous age related issues, and to future proof them for years to come.

Additionally, issues like the Nikon F3 LCD display going dim or segments appearing incorrectly are an increasing issue, and one which effects the ability for users to use the light meter or have awareness of the shutter speed in the viewfinder.
One of the challenges that comes with no manufacturer support means that no new replacement parts are made, with most parts ending production within a couple of years after the camera’s production ended in 2001. The good news is that despite this, we (South West Camera Co.) have large stocks of NOS (New Old Stock) and used parts in good condition for the various Nikon F3 variations, ring-fenced for the cameras sent to us by our customers. Additionally, we have modelled and organised manufacture of several components and continue to address other part shortages to ensure we can support the F3 for many years to come.
The F3 does of course use electronics to deliver exceptional accuracy (once recalibrated!). There are numerous components, magnets etc which are housed in modular sections, meaning that one faulty component isn’t often a death sentence, and with the right parts can be repaired, but the complexity of doing so should not be underestimated, so working with a competent specialist is important.
The circuit board which is the brain of the camera contains many complex micro-components, so there will inevitably be some degradation longer term which could result in more common faults appearing. However, all is not lost - in recent years many other electronic cameras have been rescued by the new manufacture of flexible circuit boards, and is something we will continue to monitor/explore if board failure becomes a more widespread issue, however we are fortunate to have only experienced this twice in recent years, and both cameras were heavily used examples with other issues too.

In summary, we can recommend the Nikon F3 as a reliable camera in 2026, but like any example you buy, most will now require a full overhaul to maintain reliability and full functionality.
